How to: Customize Storage Portal End-User Pages

Summary

The Northern Storage Portal End-User Pages is the interface where the IT department can communicate with the end users. The end-user pages can be streamlined to fit the company profile, corporate policies and geographical sites, ensuring clear corporate communication.

Storage Portal can be easily customized in order to adapt to the corporate standard and end user needs.

Intended results

This document describes the correct procedure to perform the following customizations of the Storage Portal pages:

- changing the displayed logo
- removing specific reports
- changing file ownership filtering
- changing the Storage Portal start page
- changing the maximum number of files returned in reports
- displaying/hiding the quota/scan path in the pages

Step-by-step

CHANGING THE LOGO

Locate the subdirectory \MyStorage\Images\ in the NSS installation directory and find the file called "logo.gif". Replace this file with a gif-file of the company logo identically named as "logo.gif" and it will be displayed in the User portal pages.

Please Note: The logo can be no larger than 80x75 pixels for it to fit the page layout.

REMOVING SPECIFIC REPORTS

It can sometimes be useful to remove certain reports from Storage Portal, either for performance tuning (removing teh collection of 'expensive' reports such as the duplicate files report for example) or in order not to confuse or misdirect users (removing the files owned by other users report for example).

To remove any of the end-user pages, locate the subdirectory \MyStorage\Include\en-us in the NSS installation directory and open the file i_Settings.txt.

The text file contains the names of the eight different end-user pages, followed by an equals sign [=] and the statement TRUE. To remove a page, replace the statement of that page with FALSE.

The following are valid values for the report display variables in i_Settings.txt:

PG_WHAT_DISPLAY Toggles display of the "What is this?" section.
PG_QUOTA_DISPLAY Toggles display of the "Disk Space Status" section.
PG_REQUEST_DISPLAY Toggles display of the "Ask for more space" section.
PG_LARGEST_DISPLAY Toggles display of the "My Largest Files" section.
PG_OLDEST_DISPLAY Toggles display of the "My Oldest Files" section.
PG_NOTOWNED_DISPLAY Toggles display of the "Files Owned by Others" section.
PG_DUPLICATES_DISPLAY Toggles collection of duplicate file data and display of the "My Duplicate Files" section.
PG_MEDIA_DISPLAY Toggles collection of binary-level media file data and display of the "Media Files" section.

IGNORING FILE OWNERSHIP

By default Storage Portal will filter reports based on file ownership (SID query); only displaying files in the main reports that are owned by the CURRENTUSER and displaying all files not owned by this user in the "Files Owned by Others" section.

It is possible that this filtering is undesirable, either because file-ownership is inaccurate or because the additional time required to collect this data is outweighs the features usefulness.

The following are valid values for ownership collection settings in i_Settings.txt:

IGNORE_OWNER Specify 'False' to enforce file ownership filtering or 'True' to remove this filtering.

CHANGING THE START PAGE

It is possible to control the page that is initially displayed to users when they access Storage Portal.

START_PAGE Use the syntax in the earlier section "Removing Specific Reports" to specify the report that is first displayed to users when they open Storage Portal.

INCREASING THE NUMBER OF FILES RETURNED

By default Storage Portal will display 100 files in the report output; the 100 oldest files, 100 largest, etc. This value can be changed to increase the scope of the reports.

FILE_COUNT Enter the number of rows that the Storage Portal reports should return.

DISPLAYING QUOTA PATH

For informational purposes it is often useful to show to the user the source of these reports; the path that was scanned to produce them. This feature is particularly useful if users have multiple quotas or regularly save files into multiple areas that are managed by quota policies.

CURRENT_PATH_DISPLAY Specify 'False' to disable this feature or 'True' to display the quota path.

Confirming Results

Results of these customizations are easily confirmed by accessing the Storage Portal pages associated with a quota.

  1. Open the Quota Server client and right-click on a relevant quota.
  2. Choose 'Go to Storage Portal'.
  3. Browse the Portal pages to confirm results.
