What is/are: NSS Deployment Pre-requisites

Check-list

This article provides an overview of what should be prepared before commencing a deployment of Northern Storage Suite. Additional information is provided in the System Requirements article KB-1791.

The following pre-requisites should be in place before installation and configuration of NSS:

  1. Managing host(s)
  2. Microsoft SQL Server
  3. Local administrator account
  4. NSS Admins Group (optional)
  5. Suitable service account
  6. Suitable account for database access
  7. NetBios enabled
  8. IIS Server
  9. Mail Server
  10. TCP/UDP Ports correctly configured
  11. Northern Storage Suite Serial Number
  12. Special considerations for NetApp systems
  13. Special considerations for EMC systems
  14. Special considerations for HDS/HNAS

For customers using Professional Services hours to receive assistance in NSS deployment: delays caused by a pre-requisite not having been fulfilled will be considered billable hours. Consult with your Account Manager or Field Engineer if anything is unclear.

More Details

MANAGING HOST(S)
One or more application servers are required to act as Managing Hosts. Information that will help in calcualting the approximate number of required managing hosts for a specific deployment and use case is avaialble in the System Requirements article KB-1791, contact your account manager for further information.

MICROSOFT SQL SERVER
Access to a dedicated or pre-existing MS SQL server for storage of collected data. Disk space requirements under normal usage will equate to less than 0.2% of the size of the storage infrastructure that will be managed. Consult with a Northern engineer if more information is required.

LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT
AD User Account with Local Administrator rights for each Managing Host. This account will be used during the installation of the software.

NSS ADMINS GROUP
It is recommended, but not required, that an 'NSS Admins' security group be created. This group should include:

  • The administrative account used for the installation.
  • The NSS service account (see below).
  • All users who will participate in managing NSS policies (this group is given access to the NSS administrative shares, instead of applying changes for individual users).

SUITABLE NSS SERVICE ACCOUNT
AD User Account under which to run the NSS services. This account should have the relevant privileges to access domain resources, resources of the Managing Host, the database server and target file systems or paths. The service account must have the following rights:

  • Administrative rights on the NSS server managing host (local Administrators group).
  • Administrative rights on remote target storage devices (‘Backup Operators’ and ‘Power Users’ membership on each CIFS server, as well as on each share, under management).
  • Administrative right (db_owner role or db_datareader, db_datawriter roles and the explicit 'Execute' permission), where windows authentication is used to connect to the SQL server.
  • The service account does not require the interactive logon right.

SUITABLE ACCOUNT FOR DBASE ACCESS (IF SQL AUTHENTICATION MODEL IS TO BE USED)
If SQL authentication is to be used when accessing the NSS database (client and server) then an SQL security account must be created. Note that this authentication model is recommended for remote client installations, more information is available in KB-2885. Ensure that this account has ddladmin, datawriter, datareader roles and the explicit 'Execute' permission to the NSS database.

NETBIOS ENABLED
NetBios is used for communication between the NSS client and NSS services, and between the NSS services and Domain Controller.

IIS SERVER
A web server is needed when Storage Portal is to be used in the deployment. This is simply a matter of enabling ISS on one of the NSS managing hosts. More information on this requirement is available in KB-2813.

MAIL SERVER
SMTP is used in the sending of report completion messages and in sending quota usage notifications. Configuration information can be found in KB-2342.

TCP/UDP PORTS CORRECTLY CONFIGURED
The ports used by Northern Storage Suite depend on the nature of the environment and the types of operations being carried-out. A full list of ports that need to be opened on the NSS host and on the target storage device is available in KB-1743.

NORTHERN STORAGE SUITE SERIAL NUMBER
This Serial Number should be valid for the correct number of TB of storage [the sum of the volumes managed]. Consult with a Northern engineer if more information is required.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR NETAPP SYSTEMS
FPolicy: FPolicy must be enabled on the target NetApp systems.
SMB Notification settings: Due to the nature of the CIFS implementation within NetApp Data ONTAP it may be necessary to adjust the SMB buffer size and notification delay on NetApp systems that are under heavy load. More information is available in KB-1785.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR EMC SYSTEMS
VEE/CEE: The Common Event Enabler framework must be installed and properly configured. Please refer to EMC published documentation to perform the necessary steps.
VEPA/CEPA: The Common Event Publishing Agent must be installed and properly configured. Please refer to EMC published documentation to perform the necessary steps.
CAVA Service Account: The account running the EMC CAVA service must be able to send locking actions through the VEPA/CEPA channel, from the NSS managing host to the VNX/Celerra. In the case where NSS and CEPA are not installed on the same application server, an Active Directory account that is a member of the local Administrators group on the CEPA server, and on the primary CIFS server (the CIFS server running on the physical datamover, where a special CHECK$ share is created) should be used. In the case where NSS and CEPA are installed on the same application server, the LocalSystem account can be used.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR HDS/HNAS SYSTEMS

Information is available in KB-3080.
