How to: License an NSS Deployment

Summary

Northern Storage Suite can run without a license for a period of 14 days from the day you install the software. After this initial period has expired it is necessary to license the installation in order to continue using it. This article describes how to license NSS.

In order to complete this process you must have a valid Serial Number that matches your intended use of Northern Storage Suite. All Serial Numbers allow management of a fixed number of target hosts and a fixed amount of storage capacity per host. Please contact your Account Manager if you are unsure of your license requirements or if your Serial Number is correctly sized.

Intended results

In the Licensing page of Northern Storage Suite it is possible to view the licensing state of the NSS hosts in the deployment. After completing the steps described in this article all hosts that are to be included in this deployment should be displayed with a green icon in this page.

Step-by-step

The licensing process is divided into two steps: registration and activation.

REGISTRATION

To register Northern Storage Suite:

  1. Open the NSS Licensing page (Start>Programs>Northern>Storage Suite>Licensing).

  2. Confirm that the NSS host(s) you wish to register are shown in the License control. If they are not displayed then you must first add the host(s):

    1. Click the 'Add' button. The License List wizard appears.
    2. Select the type of host you will be registering and click 'Next'.
    3. Provide the name of the host that will be registered. Be sure to only specify NSS managing hosts, and not an intended target NAS CIFS servers.
    4. Complete the wizard to return to the Licensing page.
      NOTE: The host(s) that you have added will be displayed with a gray icon in the Licensing page.

  3. Select the host(s) you wish to register in the License control host list and click the 'Register' button. The 'Registration' Wizard appears.

  4. Confirm that the host(s) you wish to register is/are selected.

  5. Enter your company and contact details.

  6. When asked for your Serial Number be sure to provide it in full.

  7. Specify your license server. Any server can be nominated as the License Server. You do not need to have NSS installed on the License Server - many customers choose to use their SQL server for this purpose. The only requirement is that the NSS Core Server service account has read and write access to the registry of the License Server.

  8. At the end of the wizard you will be given two choices; either 'Register by e-mail' or 'Copy registration information to clipboard'. Our recommendation is to go with 'Copy registration information to clipboard' as the 'Register by e-mail'-feature requries that an e-mail client is properly configured on the server itself.

  9. Paste the registration key to a .txt-file or directly to an e-mail and send it to registry@northern.net.

When your registration has been processed by Northern staff you will receive a License File via email. Save the license file on your server. This file is used to complete the Activation Process.

ACTIVATION
To complete the licensing process:

  1. Open the NSS Licensing page (Start>Programs>Northern>Storage Suite>Licensing).

  2. Select the server(s) you wish to license in the host list and click the 'Activate' button. The Activation Wizard will appear.

  3. Confirm that the host(s) you wish to activate is/are selected.
  4. Click the 'Browse' button and locate the Northern Storage Suite License File that you received from Northern. Click 'Next'

  5.  The 'License agreement' dialog appears. Read the agreement and, assuming you agree with the terms and conditions, click 'Agree' and then 'Finish'

Confirm Results

The host(s) that have been registered should now be displayed with a green icon in the Licensing page.

It is also possible to confirm the license state of a host, and view additional information, as follows: 

  1. Select the host in the Host List.
  2. Click on the 'Details...' button.
  3. The 'Status' field should display 'This is a licensed product'.

License errors are displayed in this Licensing page. They are also displayed in the interface of the Quota Server component (in line with quotas that cannot be enforced as a result of the error) and they are printed in the Application Event Log of the Northern Storage Suite server that is unable to execute processes due to license limitations.
