Specific Error: RPC ErrorCode 233

Specific error message

Connection probe failed with error 233 for server xxxx.
Failed to get filer status. The connection to the filer is lost.
No process is on the other end of the pipe.
(RPC ErrorCode 233)
Will retry in 10 seconds..

Error and Context

NetApp filer will in some cases not be able to connect to a windows server through a named pipe. This behavior will repeat every 10 seconds, as the Quota Server is trying to connect to the filer (see event viewer message). However this reconnection will not complete due to FPolicy being unable to access named pipes on the server machine.

The NetApp Fpolicy terminates a connection towards the windows managing host with the error "Error on named pipe" and then loops through the connection process repeating the error.

Solution

On the Windows host running NSS, open Regedt32 and browse to the following registry key:
HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/lanmanserver/parameters

Right-click the value NullSessionPipes, select Modify, and verify that the data includes NETAPPSVC on its own line.

The article states that the server need not be re-booted after changes have been made to this key. However, testing at Northern suggests that a reboot is necessary in order for changes to take effect.
